In the UK, Maclean & Eekelaar also found that even among the least involved 'never together' couples, a significant minority of the fathers kept in frequent touch with mother and baby in the period immediately after the birth. Not for nothing is childbirth known as a 'golden opportunity moment' for intervention with fathers (Cowan & Cowan, 1986).
As a group, unmarried fathers are the least likely to pay child support. Attention is often focused on encouraging them to marry their partners, as if a marriage-licence will magically bring with it commitment to partner and children.
